How I Whiten My Teeth with Hydrogen Peroxide

How I Whiten My Teeth with Hydrogen Peroxide

Most households have a bottle of hydrogen peroxide sitting under their bathroom or kitchen basins. While most people know that hydrogen peroxide helps to prevent infection from cuts and scrapes due to its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, those same people don’t realize that it is also a very effective teeth whitening agent. In fact I have used it to whiten my teeth for years now.

I have been using hydrogen peroxide to whiten my teeth and have also noticed an improvement in the overall health of my mouth and gums. Who would have thought that if I whiten my teeth I would also have these side benefits.

Hydrogen peroxide can be readily found in the most pharmacies and drugstores, usually packaged in a dark brown bottle.

Hydrogen peroxide is used as a mouthwash because of it’s great antiseptic properties, these same properties can also help with preventing infection in cuts and scrapes. Hydrogen peroxide is also a very effective teeth whitening agent, and it is listed a a primarty ingredient in most at home teeth whitening kits. Most of these home teeth whitening kits are quite expensive. I’ve found I get similar results when I whiten my teeth with this methos as I do with most commercial teeth whiteninng solutions.

I have found that I prefer hydrogen peroxide as a pre-brushing oral rinse to whiten my teeth. To begin the process, it is best to rinse your mouth out with ordinary water first to rinse your mouth of any debris. After this is accomplished, measure out a small amount (a couple of tablespoons should do it) of hydrogen peroxide into a cup and rinse your mouth with the peroxide for thirty to sixty seconds. If you like, you can just take a small swig from the bottle, which is what I usually do myself. Almost immediately the hydrogen peroxide will start to bubble and foam, which is a result of the chemical reaction between the hydrogen peroxide and the contaminants in your mouth.

It is important not to use too much hydrogen peroxide at one time since its volume will expand in your mouth due to the foaming action. The foaming action will penetrate to all areas of your mouth, even between your teeth and will help to rid your mouth of harmful bacteria that can cause bad breath or gum disease. The hydrogen peroxide instructions on the bottle suggest diluting the hydrogen peroxide with equal parts water before using as an oral rinse, but nearly every dentist I have consulted on this issue has stated that dilution is unnecessary. After rinsing your mouth with the hydrogen peroxide, then flush your mouth again with water and brush your teeth like normal. You will find that your teeth feel cleaner and are noticeably whiter after this process is repeated for several days.

To summarize, I have found the whitening and antiseptic properties of hydrogen peroxide make it an excellent treatment for my overall oral health and to whiten my teeth. I have found it to take repeated applications for the whitening of my teeth to become noticeable, but you will find that evetually  your teeth will be far whiter at a very low cost compard to other teeth whitening products on the market today.
